I’ve been to Cancun a few times, usually as part of a longer vacation around the Riviera Maya area. Because it’s so close to the airport, Cancun is a great place to relax after a road trip through the Yucatan Peninsula, or after “roughing it” in an eco-resort in Tulum.
But my prior vacations have all been in Cancun hotels– nameless, faceless ones that charge forty bucks for breakfast and leave no room in the mini bar for your big bottles of water. These hotels were ok for a short couples trip, but on this vacation, I was with a group of five friends. We were attending a work conference in Cancun and wanted a place to where we could hang out together after the conference. Somewhere with common space that didn’t require ringing up a large bar bill– where we could relax and be ourselves.
After researching all the options, we decided on a condo rental in Cancun through FlipKey. So how did our FlipKey condo work out for us?
1. Comfy sofas, soon to be filled with bloggers and their laptops
We loved having a huge living room and cushy sofas large enough for all five of us to spread out on, each with our laptop, iPads and iPhones close at hand. We whiled away the hours here chatting, sharing stories and pretending to work. In the mornings, it was hard to motivate to get off these sofas to make our way to the conference.
2. Little touches that made our FlipKey condo feel like a home
It was the small things that made our FlipKey condo feel like a home. I loved having a staircase– the separation from the “living” area and sleeping area felt like a real luxury. After spending the last week on sandy beaches, having a washer dryer was a godsend.
3. A Huge Kitchen Saved time and Money
Why hang out at the hotel bar when we had a huge fridge right in our condo? We packed it with Mexican beer and saved ourselves a bar bill. We loved the huge, well-stocked kitchen too– and might have experimented making some late night eggs and chorizo over tortilla chips.
4. Plush Beds and Plenty of Space
The bedrooms were large with ample closet space. It was actually a little too comfortable– one morning we were due at the conference center for an early morning twitter chat. We decided to have a “virtual” presence as we all piled up in this bed with a view of the ocean.
5. And this View from our Balcony
Which brings us to the best thing about having our own private vacation rental in Cancun– an enormous balcony with this view. In the evenings, we had the sunset, and later the moon and stars, to accompany our cocktails. In the morning, we had the sunrise with our morning coffee.
For a group of friends, or a family, I can’t think of a better way to enjoy a vacation than with a house rental from FlipKey.

Loved being able to stay in an apartment rather than a stuffy hotel :)

This view was the best part of the rental, aside from the company :) So glad we went with a condo over a hotel room during TBEX!
